Now, you might wonder why the two of them, who met and fell in love in a city, must choose a secluded, even if picturesque, location to communicate something significant yet customary. Here is where Nagashekar, as a director, reveals his priorities. He is a filmmaker who banks heavily on exotic locales and melodious music to narrate his stories.
You might also wonder why Geetha has such an outdated opinion about relationships, especially when she met Sanju in a chance encounter and developed feelings for him. It shows that Nagashekar continues to go nowhere close to reality regarding love stories. An old-school, fairytale-like romantic drama still fascinates him.
Sanju Weds Geetha 2 (Kannada)
Director: Nagashekar
Cast: Rachita Ram, Srinagara Kitty, Rangayana Raghu, Sadhu Kokila
Runtime: 122 minutes
Storyline: Sanju, a silk weaver with meagre earnings falls in love with Geetha, a girl from an affluent background. When they decide to get married against the wishes of Geetha’s father, their relationship faces a huge test.
Nothing is believable in this done-to-death, poor-man-loving-rich-girl story. Learning about his daughter’s relationship with an ordinary silk weaver, Geetha’s father reminds her about their so-called stature.
“I gifted you a Rolls-Royce when you joined school,” he tells her. If this stereotypical depiction of an evil father wasn’t enough, the director scripts a cliched character arc for his protagonist. Sanju is a large-hearted man, helping the needy despite his meagre earnings. This generous mind impresses Geetha.

The second half is another ploy to manipulate the audience. From the beginning, we know the story is headed towards a tragic end. Geetha suffers a life-threatening lung disease, and the film’s treatment of the situation is ridiculous. The couple heads to Switzerland for the crucial lung transplantation, and before the all-important event, we witness a duet song set against some gorgeous locations in Geneva. The director’s lack of judgment in handling the serious conflicts of his story influences performances, with Rachita and Kitty looking clueless in several scenes.
Sanju Weds Geetha 2 is a spiritual sequel to the 2013 blockbuster Sanju Weds Geetha. Starring Ramya/Divya Spandana and Kitty, the original was an ordinary film saved by a fantastic album by Jassie Gift and a brilliant performance from Ramya. Those were simpler times when songs would decide the fate of films. Impressed with soulful tracks from Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal, the young crowd flocked to theatres.

The sequel repeats the elements of the original in the worst possible way. Even the songs of Sanju Weds Geetha 2 failed to make a mark in the run-up to its release. Today, with enough exposure to films from across the world, it’s hard to manipulate people. I have seen people break down in theatre after the climax of Nagashekar’s Mynaa (2013). The Kannada audience has always had an affinity for stories with heartbreaks. But with time, their demand for better storytelling has only grown stronger.
