A 28-year-old man in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore killed himself, after accusing his estranged wife and her family of harassment. The deceased man had also requested the government to amend the laws on marital disputes, police said on Wednesday (January 22, 2025).

According to the police, Nitin Padiyar, a resident of Indore’s Yadavanand Nagar, was found dead in his house on Monday (January 20, 2025) night and that a note was recovered from the spot which named his wife and members of her family.

Indore Zone 3 Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Hansraj Singh told The Hindu that it is a 14 page note and that the police are currently analysing it.

“Apart from allegations of harassment, the note also talks about laws and legal process in the country, social and marital issues,” Mr. Singh said, adding that the police have initiated an inquest in the matter and launched a preliminary investigation.

He said that the couple had been separated around two years ago and that a case is going on in a Rajasthan court.

“Padiyar used to travel there often for the case proceedings. We are working to get the details of the case before we initiate legal proceedings here,” he said, adding that the deceased’s wife has been informed about the death and will be contacted based on the findings of the investigation.

Banganga police station incharge Siyaram Gurjar told The Hindu that in the note, Padiyar has accused his wife of demanding ₹30 lakh for the settlement of the case.

“We are going to analyse his mobile phone and record the statements of Padiyar’s family very soon. We have the allegations made in the note and will file a case once we have gathered more evidences,” Mr. Gurjar said.

They were married in 2019 after having been in a live in relationship, and have a three-year-old child, he added. Padiyar ran a small business in the area, he said.

The incident comes just days after a 27-year-old man in the State’s Rajgarh district allegedly killed, leaving behind a video accusing his wife and her family of harassment.

Earlier in December, the case of Atul Subhash, a Bengaluru based techie, allegedly killing himself and accusing his wife and in-laws of harassment and legal battles in video and written messages had created an uproar among netizens.
