India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI: Arshdeep – Rohit memes take over social media after nail biting tie in Colombo

Team India came so close yet remained so far from victory during the 1st ODI encounter against Sri Lanka on Friday. The key clash between India and Sri Lanka was tied after the Men in Blue failed to secure 1 run from 14 balls, leading to fans taking his anger out on Arshdeep SIngh who was facing last ball of the innings.

India vs Sri Lanka 1st ODI: Fans compare Arshdeep Singh with Shanon Gabriel

Notably, the match looked shaky at one stage for India after losing half their side on a score of 132. However, some valiant knocks by Axar Patel and Shivam Dube brought the Men in Blue close to the finish line, requiring just 1 run from 14 balls. However, Charith Asalanka dismissed Dube and Arsdheep Singh to secure only a secure a 2nd over ODI tie between the two nations.

Fans on social media were particularly rebuffed with Arshdeep trying to hit a big shot off Asalanka, instead of looking to get a single. The dismissal led to Arshdeep getting compacted with West Indies player Shanon Gabriel who played out a similar scenario during a Test match against Pakistan in 2017.

During that encounter, West Indies just needed to see off just 7 balls to secure a draw and Gabriel more or less just had to see off one last ball with a well settled Roston Chase on the other end. However, Gabriel instead looked to take the offensive route against Yasir Shah and the ball smashed bang into his stumps.

Meme fest begins after Arshdeep Singh’s slog attempt:

One user on X while laying the blame on Arshdeep said, “So What if most batsman struggled initially to bat on this wicket Arshdeep Singh Gayle thinks he can hit a one handed six from the handle of his bat…”

Another user wrote, “ya wahiyat shot khela Arshdeep Singh ne, just blind slogging when you need just one run to win. Horrible cricket. Cost us the match.”

Meanwhile, some users also came to the defence of Arshdeep. One such user wrote, “Arshdeep Singh had to limit comments on this Insta post so his Father doesn’t become target of hate. He lead India to World Cup victory but it’s never enough if you are Sikh. You are just one bad performance away from Hate filled campaigns. We are proud of you Arsh veer.”
