Theera Sangamam (coastal gathering) will be organised in the coastal belt of the city to encourage livelihoods of Kudumbashree neighbourhood groups.

Coastal residents are some of the most marginalised segments in society. Against this backdrop, the Kudumbashree has been trying to strengthen its network in the coastal belt and make special interventions.

As part of this effort, the Kudumbashree district mission will organise Theera Sangamam for members of neighbourhood groups under nine Kudumbashree community development societies (CDSs) on the Shanghumughom beach from February 14 to 18.

The gathering is being held to mainstream Kudumbashree units operating in the coastal belt that make a host of products that but do not get much exposure. It is aimed at arranging a platform for discussing the problems faced by neighbourhood groups in the coastal area and suggesting solutions.

Besides a food court by Cafe Kudumbashree, one of the most significant initiatives of the Kudumbashree in the food sector, an exhibition-cum-sale of products made by the units and cultural programmes by the unit members will be held. A music evening will be held on February 18.

Seminars will also be held as part of Theera Sangamam. On February 15, a seminar on entrepreneurial possibilities in animal husbandry and agriculture in blue economy and another on role of Sagarmala, DDUGKY, and K-DISC projects will be held.

An awareness programme on the ills of substance abuse will also be held in association with the Excise department. Mime and flash mob will be used to create awareness of the issue, a major problem in the coastal area.

The Theera Sangamam will be inaugurated by Minister for Local Self-government M.B. Rajesh at 6 p.m. on February 14.

Depending on the success of the event, beach festivals will be planned at locations such as Poovar and Varkala.
