Eight people, some of them migrant workers, were injured in a wasp attack at Pazhamthottam in Aikaranad panchayat in Ernakulam on Monday while they were engaged in building a retaining structure for a road in the panchayat.
Panchayat council member Sathyprakash A. said the injured were initially taken to a government hospital nearby but were later referred to the Government Medical College Hospital (MCH), Kalamassery. The injured were examined and given treatment at the MCH before being discharged, he added.
The incident occurred around 10.30 a.m. A swarm of wasps attacked the workers and a panchayat official as they were caught unawares by the sudden surge. They ran helter-skelter to save themselves. The wasp attack is suspected to have been caused by a disturbance to a beehive.
