Court imposes ₹18.02 lakh fine on water plant owner for power theft in Ballari district


The First Additional District and Sessions Court in Ballari recently imposed a fine of ₹18,02,951 on a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant owner after he was found guilty of stealing power by bypassing the power meter installed for the plant.

The court also ordered a simple imprisonment of three months in default of payment of the fine amount.

As per information provided by Public Prosecutor in the case Shekharappa, owner of Purnima Enterprises Amaresh Shastri stole electricity by bypassing the energy meter to run the plant.

Purnima Enterprises operates the RO plant at Elubenchi village in Ballari district.

The theft was discovered when a power vigilance squad of Gulbarga Electricity Company Limited (GESCOM) was on its usual patrol.

Following a complaint by Assistant Engineer and a member of GESCOM Vigilance Squad K. Gadilingappa, a case was registered against the accused.

Police Inspector of GESCOM Vigilance Squad R. Gayathri investigated the case and filed the charge-sheet.

After hearing both parties and examining the evidence on record, First Additional District and Sessions Judge Vidyadhar Shirahatti held the accused guilty of offences specified in the charge-sheet under Section 135(1) of the Electricity Act 2003 and passed the order.
