Mridangam exponent Yella Venkateswara Rao has won this year’s Sangeethabhushan Award instituted in the name of Vellinezhi Subramania Bhagavathar.

Dr. Rao will receive the award at a function to be held at Olappamanna Mana at Vellinezhi on Sunday. The occasion will mark the 35th death anniversary celebrations of Subramania Bhagavathar, one of the important disciples of Carnatic legend Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar.

It will be the 13th edition of the Sangeethabhushan Award. Last year, vocalist T.N. Seshagopalan, violinist Nedumangad Sivanandan and mridangam maestro Vaikom Venugopal had won the award. Though vocalist Thrissur V. Ramachandran won the award of 2021, violin maestro V.V. Subramaniam won it in 2022, and mridangam maestro Thiruvananthapuram V. Surendran in 2023, all the three of them were given the awards at a function held in January 2023.

Subramania Bhagavathar’s son P.S. Raman, who is also president of the commemoration committee, will give away the award on Sunday evening. Lyricist B.K. Harinarayanan will inaugurate the function. District Panchayat member Sreedharan Master will preside over the function.

Carnatic musician Mannoor M.P. Rajakumaranunni will commemorate Subramania Bhagavathar. It will be followed by a Carnatic music concert by Carnatica Brothers from Chennai.
