The accused, identified as Murthy K., a resident of Bommanahalli, was a BCA graduate working with a private firm. The police said that he confessed that he was paid a low salary but was addicted to online gambling. This led him to steal gold valuables and cash from the locked houses, Inspector Krishna Kumar said.
Explaining the modus operandi, Mr. Kumar said that Murthy would go around the area looking for the locked houses and check for the keys, which are kept under window sills or show rocks. These are the common places where working couples usually keep keys. He would gain entry and steal only gold and cash, which is easy to carry, the police said.Â
Using this modus operandi, the accused committed six house break-ins around the Begur area and two in Surya City. Following a complaint filed on December 20, the police began investigating and tracked him down using CCTV footage. Based on his confession, the police recovered 261 grams of gold worth ⚠18.5 lakh. The accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
